History Of Estimated Location

The Fortymile Mining District is one of Alaska’s oldest continuously mined goldfields in the state. First mined in 1886, when Howard Franklin discovered gold on Franklin Gulch, Fortymile has become legendary in Alaska’s mining history.

In the spring of 1888, gold placers were located on Davis Creek, a headwater tributary of Walker Fork. In the following year Poker Creek, another headwater tributary, as well as the main Walker Fork, were found to be the sites of commercial gold placers. Further interest in the Fortymile District was created in 1892 by the discovery of gold placers east of the international boundary, on Miller and Glacier Creeks, which head against Walker Fork and drain southeastward to the Sixtymile River.

Largely as a result of this new discovery an influx of prospectors and miners into the Fortymile District began in 1893, and many new placers were soon located. The sequence and dates of discovery and mining of most of the other gold placers of the Fortymile District cannot be stated. It is known, however, that mining on Dome Creek dates from 1893, that the placers of Wade Creek were first located in 1895, and that those of Chicken Creek were discovered in the spring of 1896. The towns of Franklin and Chicken were the largest centers of commerce and supplies, though there were smaller communities mostly centered around mining camps.

Probably the legend came about from the old timers who worked its creeks. They were veterans of previous stampedes like the Cariboo, Fraser and Cassiar of British Columbia; Deadwood, South Dakota; and a few ancient bearded prospectors who had survived the California Gold Rush of 1849. A few outlaws who were looking to put some mileage between them and the law also participated in the Fortymile gold rush.

The Fortymilers, as they have sometimes been referred to, were indeed a hearty breed. The district had a fair paystreak running through its hills. It was a harsh region, but habitable, and small settlements sprang up along tributaries of the Fortymile watershed.

There were a number of old sourdoughs who endured the rigors of this unique region, staying on, working their claims or sniping the benches and bars, perfectly content to spend 50 years or more working the gold-laden gravels of the region.

The Fortymile’s dark, steep gulches became the extreme school of northern prospecting that would set a precedent for future gold regions where gold would be found in the later years to come, like the Klondike, Nome, Fairbanks and Koyukuk, to name a few.

 Nugget Facts:

·       What is a Natural Gold Nugget? It is a piece of gold that broke out of quartz deposits within the earth when erosion took place. It also goes by the name Placer Gold and each piece is a one of a kind with no two being exactly alike.

·       Where can they be found? Wherever the effects of erosion took place. That would include rivers, streams, ancient dried up river channels and underground riverbeds.

·       How pure are they?  Gold nuggets range from 65 to 95 fine 16-23KT gold and can have other mineral content such as silver and copper mixed in with it.

·       What sizes do they come in? Gold Nuggets come in all sizes, the smaller one range in sizes from 1 millimeter up to 6 and is often referred to as flakes. Bigger flakes are called nuggets and have been found as large as 2500 ounces although almost all nuggets bigger than 300 ounces were melted.

·       How Are Natural Gold Nuggets found? They can be found in rivers and streams using a gold pan or suction dredges that act like an underground vacuum cleaner. Larger operations use large machinery that dig up huge sections of dirt weighing several tons and run it through machines that separate the gold from the dirt. Nuggets are also found using a metal detector.

·       How are they weighed? They are weighed by the troy ounces. 12 ounces = one pound which differs from weight which is 16 ounces to the pound. The troy ounces are broke up into 20-penny weight to the ounces and use the symbol DWT or by the grams which has 31.1 to the ounces. The larger the nugget the more rare and valuable they are. A one-ounce nugget is now considered as rare as a five-carat diamond. (How many of those do you own?)

·       Why are some real bright and others dull? Because it was formed underground in quartz deposit you often find quartz mixed in with it. When they broke off into the rivers and streams they tumbled against the sand and gravel, which gave the nuggets, it?s texture but dulled it. They can be cleaned in different solutions, and then tumbled in different media to give it the shine.
